As an initiative to bringing more accessible news to persons with diverse abilities, our member Jugend am Werk GmbH and KURIER, an Austrian daily paper developed a cooperation agreement. The agreement aims to create easy-to-read newspaper articles written by persons with intellectual disabilities. At the moment, inclusive editorial group consists of 6 participants with some kind of learning disability, two pedagogic attendants and two journalists who serve as instructors. Participants are trained to translate texts through a journalistic approach and to write their own stories. The programme is planned to last three years and is fully funded by Fond Soziales Wien, the social service provider of Vienna Outlook. It hopes to empower participants to become experts in writing easy to read texts and to provide them with regular jobs in the future. If successful, the programme will provide the editorial group with permanent positions in KIERER.
